Hello!
In May 2023, I completed my final year of my undergraduate degree and diploma at the University of Guelph-Humber specializing in Visual Communication. I have a passion for photography and videography and I am looking to secure contract, part time, or full time work. Currently I have a contract position for a non-profit organization based in Hamilton, ON (60 hrs a month) doing work in the field of media, as well as volunteer coordination, to continue honing my skills while giving back to my community. This position will be coming to an end shortly due to lack of funding. I also have experience as a camera operator, production assistant, video creator, and photographer (animals, people, and products) through my internship last fall and other projects.

Herakles and the Goblet of Fire

Many classical myths are alluded to throughout the Harry Potter series. Myths were important to ancient Greeks, because they “are the archaic way of interpreting the world and its meaning, in times before science” and, “talks about another level that exists alongside our world.” The most expansive comparison made to Greek mythology, in Johanne (J.K.) Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is specifically confined to a competition Harry is involved in—the Triwizard Tournament. It is a modern novel that draws strong similarities to the labours of Hercules, explained by Pseudo-Apollodorus in Bibliotheca Book 2 Chapter 5. Hercules and Harry are drafted into undertaking difficult and dangerous tasks which culminate in their retrieval of important items. They face creatures with similar characteristics, as well as comparable monsters. There are equivalent characters and themes—like those who use transformation to hide their evil intentions—in both Pseudo-Apollodorus’ and Rowling’s stories.
Magic or Medicine: a Closer Look at J. K. Rowling's Inspiration

February 2022
In this essay, specific examples will be made to passages in the Harry Potter books, and to scenes from the Harry Potter films, in order to reveal and explore the connection of classical era medicine, and the Latin language, to give a sense of reality to the fictional Wizarding World. The paper will be broken down into the characters and practices of Hogwarts staff: Madam Poppy Pomfrey, the matron; Professor Pomona Sprout, the Herbology teacher; Professor Remus Lupin, a werewolf who teaches Defence Against the Dark Arts; and Professor Severus Snape, the Potions Master. The end of this section will be dedicated to the medicinal ingredients in potions and how they were used in ancient times. Incantations, both curses to inflict injuries and counter-curses to protect against the former, as well as many other spells, have Latin roots. Many directly translate to how they hurt, or heal, a witch or wizard, indicating the importance of the ancient language when Rowling created the terms for her spells. Finally, this paper will examine the wizarding hospital, St Mungo’s, and the etymology behind the name of a Healer in Charge, as well as similarities between magical beasts in the Harry Potter series and Greek and Roman mythology, with an emphasis on their connection to medicine and mortality. J. K. Rowling’s post-secondary education in Classics[1] enabled her to build a strong correlation between her literary world and the world of the ancient Greeks and Romans.
